Character backstory generator
Most backstory generators give you a random paragraph. InkBorn builds the person first, with traits that fit their age, country and era, then writes a backstory that uses every detail and contradicts none.
How it works
- Roll or describe a character. Tap Roll for a stranger, or describe who you need in a sentence and your details are kept.
- Shape the file. Lock what you like, re-roll the rest, and add fears, flaws or a secret.
- Draft the backstory. Click Draft a backstory and get a paragraph that ties the whole file together. Redraft as often as you like.
Because the traits are generated to fit each other first (a seven-year-old won't have a mortgage, and nobody in 1985 has a TikTok), the backstory starts from a person who already makes sense.

A character rolled on InkBorn, and the backstory its AI wrote from that file.

Backstory
Orla Teresa McFadden was born on 10 June 1974 and left school with nothing more than her Junior Certificate, a fact she laughs off whenever it comes up. At fifty-two she is a tall, stocky woman, nearly six foot in her socks, with a blond pixie cut and green eyes that miss very little. She cleans offices for a living and has done so for most of her working life, moving through the building before dawn with a trolley and a radio playing folk tunes under her breath. Her nature is sunny but fatalistic: she expects things to go wrong and meets them with a shrug, and when a crisis lands she is the first to take charge. She is creative and hopeful, though she is also manipulative when it suits her and cannot keep a secret to save her life. Money slips through her fingers, and she has a habit of spending what she does not have. Her husband and their two children, now aged twenty-three and eleven, know her well. She keeps her hands busy in the shed with woodwork, and she covers every scrap of paper with doodles. Only she knows about the half-sibling she has never met.
What makes a backstory useful
A good backstory isn't a biography. It gives you something to write towards. When you read one, look for:
- A want and a fear that pull against each other. Orla expects the worst but takes charge when it comes.
- A secret. Something the character knows that others don't is a ready-made scene.
- A contradiction. Optimistic and manipulative, creative and broke: tension makes people feel real.
- Ordinary detail. A radio on the cleaning trolley does more work than a dramatic childhood.
Questions
How does the backstory generator work?
Roll or describe a character first. When you click Draft a backstory, InkBorn sends the whole character file to Claude, an AI model, which writes a short paragraph that uses every trait and contradicts none of them.
Is it free?
Yes. Backstories use AI, so there's a fair-use limit of 15 AI uses per visitor per day. Rolling and editing characters is unlimited.
Can I change the backstory?
Change any trait, lock the ones you like, and redraft. You can also copy the file or export it to Word or Markdown and edit the backstory there.
Who owns the characters and backstories?
They're yours to use in your writing. Every character is fictional; check names and handles before you publish, in case one matches a real person.
